Kayso that was way more fun than I thought it might be. And kudos to Food Network for boldly going where no cooking show has gone before, apparently, judging by the pearl-clutching and hand-wringing and gasps of indignation happening on various comment threads by the minority of people still willingly trapped in the golden years of stifling LGBT oppression ("Heaven forfend! Think of the children! Our family simply cannot watch this!" Seriously? If your children's health and well-being are threatened by the mention of a husband and the sight of a kiss, you have far bigger problems than can be solved by posting on a Facebook thread. Oh, and BTW: Some of those children, whom you are afraid will get some gay on them if they see, you know.... gay people? They're already gay. They were born that way. Just FYI), although the Twitter response to Johnny's appearance on Rachael vs. Guy was overwhelmingly positive.
A random sample from the hundreds of tweets:
Ah, yes, the skit. And that kiss. But let's take it from the top, shall we? First: YES WE HAVE VIDEO!! The full episode is already available online at the Rachael vs. Guy official website (international fans: if that video won't play for you, please try this link). Most importantly, we have a highlight reel featuring all the best parts, by which of course I mean all the parts that have Johnny in them:
Video link.
And we also have screencaps to take us through the show:
After Johnny makes his grand entrance,
as the last competitor to walk through the door
and meet the other celebrities, wearing his
"competing shoes," he and Kathy Najimy enjoy
a spontaneous outbreak of dancing.
Just like the rest of us, she can't
take her eyes off him.
Just like the rest of us, she can't
take her eyes off him.
Hard at work in the kitchen.
Donning his costume for the Team Guy skit
under the appreciative gaze of Chilli,
who coos at the sight of him shirtless:
"Let me just touch....
Oh lawd, have mercy. Woooooo!"
Awaiting his cue.
In disguise, he quietly slips into
the background of the skit...
...and waits for his moment,
as Cornelia Guest explains that "the way
to a man's heart is through his stomach."
"Well, I.... know... bettah!"
declares Peg Tumbleweeds.
"I know that the way to a man's heart...
is with Peg's 'Chicken Tumbleweeds.'"
"If none of that floats your boat,"
says a suddenly overheated Deputy Dean,
"well, I know what floats mine...."
"Papa Dean, right before we went on the stage,
said, 'I'm going to kiss you at the end.'
And I was like, 'OK, well, I'll just, I'll turn my head,
and you can get right in there on the cheek....'"
"C'mere, Miss Peggy."
(Apparently Dean envisioned this moment
a bit differently than did Johnny....)
"I'm making out with Tori Spelling's husband...
and I love it."
"Y'all come back now, ya hear?"
smiles Miss Peggy.
smiles Miss Peggy.
Team Guy celebrates: "We have a home run!"
Post mortem: "I got dipped,"
Johnny remarks almost accusatorily to Dean.
Almost, but the twinkle in his eye gives him away.
"You got dipped AND kissed,"
Dean states emphatically.
"You have very nice, soft lips, by the way."
During the judging portion,
Guy enthuses about the reaction to the skit:
"Johnny, it's no surprise you stole the show!"
A sly glance at Papa Dean.
Unfortunately, the reviews of the chicken tumbleweeds
are not as positive: Too dry, and needed more fat.
But Team Guy wins overall,
and Johnny is safe for another week!
However, as much fun as all that was, my favorite moment of the show by far was near the beginning:
"I'm ready to dish up the soup..."
"...so there are my boys:
my husband and my son..."
(Yes! Do want unexpected Victor! And Tyoma!)
(Yes! Do want unexpected Victor! And Tyoma!)
"I'm competing for the Human Rights Campaign,
which fights for lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender rights."
Yes, including the right to be able to mention that he has a husband without people freaking out that that's not family-friendly (the logic continues to boggle the mind. How is a "husband" NOT "family-friendly" if "families" are supposed to include "husbands"? And/or "wives"?), and the right to someday live in a world where a kiss between two men isn't seen as A Sign Of The End Times And We Are All Doomed OMG Gather The Children (Unless They're Gay).
Or really as anything out of the ordinary at all. Just... a kiss.

Bonus pics!! Basically the only ones I've seen
out of Johnny's performances for
Stars on Ice: Japan Tour 2013. Arrrrrrgh.
These two screencaps, of Saturday's finale
in Osaka, come from this video, which sadly
lacks any footage of actualfax skating by Johnny.
I have seen nothing of his Black Swan performance on Sunday, although it earned rave reviews on Twitter. This tiny sample does not begin to do it justice, but his timeline got overwhelmed with Rachael vs. Guy stuff before I could grab adequate screencaps. This gives you the general idea at least:
He's now back in Tokyo, where he'll be performing this Saturday, Sunday, and Monday with Stars on Ice before heading back home. Ganbatte, Johnny!!
Note: He'll also be on Fuji-TV tomorrow at 2 pm Japan time (midnight tonight New York time. IDK if they have a livestream, but hoping...!).
Bonus video!! In case you just want to watch
As my state of Illinois considers its own
marriage-rights bill this month, which,
if approved, would make us the 10th state
to enact marriage equality, I so want to
email this to every person in the state.

Thank you, Johnny, for adding a lot of spice to the cooking show. Thank you, Binky, for being the leavening in my day.
Black swan sounds wonderful. Eager for more photo and videos.
