Johnny in his gorgeous new Phoenix costume
near the end of his Rostelecom Cup / Cup of Russia
free skate practice last Saturday, just moments before
he made the decision to withdraw from the competition.
Photo tweeted by the lovely Irina Volkova.
As stunningly beautiful as this is, the pain
and enormous stress he was under at the time
are evident on his face.
IMPORTANT UPDATE
Just in case anyone wasn't clear on
how truly awful this past week was,
please read Johnny's gripping and disturbing account,
in his new column for the Falls Church News-Press,
of the nightmare that ensued when he and his family
found themselves suddenly stranded in Russia.
Well. This is one of those weeks where pretty much the only thing I can say about it is, "Yay! I'm glad that's over with!"
And so here's a bunch of random stuff left over from the week that was... not quite what we had envisioned. (Although I think the fan meeting was every kind of wonderful imaginable. So that helped.)
As always, please click any photo twice for larger view.
Phoenix
These photos taken by Irina Volkova at last Saturday's free skate practice offer a few glimpses of Johnny's new Phoenix costume, and of what might have been had his injury not forced him to withdraw from both Cup of Russia and TEB. The strain of this terrible-horrible-no good-very bad week definitely took its toll, as he noted when he tweeted upon his return home that he had eaten "everything in sight"while in Russia—and lost five pounds (eeeeeeek).
Dear Johnny, please take good care of yourself, enjoy every last bit of TLC from your family and puppy, and know that we love and support you always. And we can't wait to see you perform this breathtaking program in competition again whenever you're ready. #TeamWeir #WeBelieve

And we have video!! Johnny's interview
in the mixed zone, part 1, from Irina Volkova.
English portion begins at about 6:00.
Mixed zone, part 2 (all in English!). I find his remarks
from about 5:04 to 5:52 to be an astute assessment
of why figure skating continues to hemorrhage
both artistry and fans.
Bonus video!! I have no idea what
the commentator says beyond "Johnny Weir,"

but the point of the clip is to show the various

this is what's missing from so much of competition:
the joy a skater finds in his or her gift.

Thank you for posting. Johnny's LP costume is brilliant and beautiful. Seeing the segment of rehearsal also builds anticipation.
Johnny's face looks very pale and tentative, so I hope that he heals and the pain goes away soon. Those jumps are punishing on the body so injuries are par for the course. We have not seen much of two other rumored returnees of late, either.
