Here is Johnny in his own words today, in his latest column for the Falls-Church News-Press. While we still await a direct statement from him regarding his future, he addresses the issue here obliquely, through the prism of NYFW and with brutally self-aware honesty—as always. Please read.
Some brief excerpts:
Growing up skinny, socially awkward and with a weird craft, I always wanted to be cool. I always wanted to be popular ... I wasn’t prepared however, for the flip-side of popularity. I wasn’t prepared that everything you say will have a 50/50 response, that complete strangers hate you for no reason aside from the fact that you didn’t believe the same things they did. I wasn’t prepared. ...
Every shooting star has a fleeting moment when everyone can see it, before its luminescence is burned up. I now know what it’s like to be loved and hated on an international scale.
My own personal hope is that I continue to grow in a way that helps me understand the mistakes of my life and learn from them, more so than wallow in what might have been or what was. — Johnny Weir

To all who have asked me about the news reports regarding Johnny being out of consideration for the Sochi Winter Games:
In order to potentially qualify for the Olympic team, Johnny had to register by September 1 to compete in events that would lead to qualifying for the national championships, from which the Oly team is named. He also would need to compete in, I believe, at least one international event to get the technical element scores required to be considered for the Oly team (arcane rules about points/scoring in competitive figure skating are not my forte, as many of you know!).
Earlier this week, US Figure Skating confirmed to the Associated Press that he did NOT register for any competitive events by the September 1 deadline. This has exploded into a zillion media stories spun a zillion different ways, while Johnny himself has not responded to requests for comment. His tweet above says he’ll be making a statement soon.
While I can readily accept that he might choose to bring his competitive career to a close to move on to brighter horizons, I await his statement in his own words to tell his fans what his plans are. ♥

I would not dare to opine on what Johnny Weir should or shouldn't do with his life and career. As a fan, I am not in a position that would give me that privilege. Nor am I remotely qualified to tell Johnny how to live his life. I have enough of a challenge trying to live my own life with some semblance of success (however that is defined).
But it is disconcerting when such major news comes via AP and not Johnny or someone speaking on his behalf.
I'm looking forward to hearing about his future plans, inside or outside of skating. I just hope those plans including continuing to say quotable things.
Whatever happens or does not happen, I'll still be a fan of both Johnny Weir and his skating. His artistry and self-expression will endure long after the other skaters have lost their ability to turn quads.
I think the American Medical Association should disapprove of quads, just as they disapprove of boxing for its connection to head injuries.
