So it's KILLING me not to go to Skate for the Goal, which is a thing that's happening TOMORROW at which Johnny will be appearing—though not skating, as far as I know, but whatever: he'll BE there, in all his amazing Johnnyness, which is never to be missed if at all possible--and where, for the insanely low price of $10, you can actually go chat with him at the meet-n-greet, enjoy a whole lot of great skating, and also feel good that your $10 is going to support two wonderful charities, Special Olympics-NY and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. And while that ticket price is beyond tempting, I just cannot work out the numbers of spending hundreds of dollars on gas to drive like 1600 miles round trip for a 30-minute meet-n-greet and make it seem cost-effective and also like I'm not a crazy person. I even consulted my current edition of Math for Figure Skating Judges: What to Do When the Numbers Make No F*cking Sense Whatsoever But You're Stubbornly Committed to Them Against All Reason (Braille Edition)—which I'm hoping will be replaced with an updated volume by this fall (no pun intended. See what I did there?) (tentative working title: The New Math for Figure Skating Judges: Johnny Wins! Hello.)—and even then, I was just left with: +3 GOE for the attempt, but so many deductions for traveling (and not even on a spin) that I ended up at like -$500,000. A new personal not-best.
So if you're anywhere near Sky Rink, Chelsea Piers, in New York City this weekend--GO. Get your tickets now at Sky Rink, or at the door on Saturday, or by emailing skateforthegoal@gmail.com. Go for all of us who can't, and will instead be slouching at our desks clad in leggings, baggy oversized sweaters, and a bitchy attitude, seeking comfort the only way we know how: endless chocolate, with a giant side of Johnny picspam. And if you go, FFS please TAKE SOME PICS! (And send them to me, if you're so inclined. I'd love that. *side eyes at Maggie, Deb, Jenn, Karen, Beth...*) And please tell him hi from Binky. ♥
Oh, one other thing before we drown our sorrows in a beautifully lit, frozen sea of picspam: Kayso IDK if you noticed, but dear Beauty Bear Eric Alt has done some tweaking of his Twitter accounts. His original account, @EricAltSalons, is no more. Instead he now has @MREricAlt, which is his personal account, and the new @EricAltSalon (no "s" at the end), for biz purposes.
If you followed @EricAltSalons before, you likely got transferred automatically to @MREricAlt--but to get all the latest news, specials, and tips from Alt world, you need to follow the new account.
The fabulous Kristen Lohman is now the voice of @EricAltSalon, and she has personally promised that she will "dish out interesting tweets on everything from hair, fashion, lifestyle, and of course anything Eric does with the incredibly handsome, well-coiffed Johnny." I love her already. She understands us. So please show her and Eric some love by following @EricAltSalon ASAP!
OK then. On to picspam of the most amazing skater in the world.
Ave Maria, Part 1
The following series of photos covers just the first 40 seconds
of this beautiful, beautiful program.
Johnny's performance that night at Holiday Dreams on Ice
seemed particularly inspired and ethereal.
After I saw Victor's tweet yesterday, I debated whether to run this series or go with some practice pics. But Johnny's pose in Victor's pic immediately brought to mind his Ave Maria performance, as you'll see below.
Ordinarily we edit most photos to offer a close-up of Johnny, because that's most often what readers want: that feeling that he's right there. But I couldn't bear to crop any of these. The lighting is so breathtaking, and the shadows and reflections of Johnny created on the ice are such an integral part of the whole effect that I left each one exactly as Davey had taken them--exactly how he framed Johnny with the camera.
The lighting also varies from golden to blue to purple, altering the hue of his costume. And sometimes it's just enough to softly, barely illuminate the arena's staircases behind him.
Fortunately, these uncropped photos are, in fact, HUGE. And magnificently detailed. So it's the best of both worlds. Please click to the full-size versions, and please be patient: because they're so huge, they take a moment to load. Then click again for full size. And then linger over every one.....
The first five photos are Johnny's opening pose on the ice
as he waits for the right moment in the music.
Each one is slightly different--his expression changes
very subtly, and he shifts his body just a bit.

The lighting also shifts--in photos 2 and 4,
one spotlight is brighter, or maybe there's an extra one;
in the others, the scene is darker.
The lighting casts a trinity of shadows across the ice
as Johnny prepares to skate....

I truly have no words for these.
But it's OK, because my lovely friend Junko,
whom I was so thrilled to meet at HDOI,
already said it all for me:
That night Johnny was very beautiful and was Angel.
He shined by happiness.
His existence in itself is art.
God dwelled in this night Johnny.

The secret stash of picspam that never ends!! yay!!!
Vitya is sooooo lucky! He gets a front row seat at practices! Feeling very jealous right now... it's like having special access to a living art show.
You need to make a flip-book with all of Johnny´s photos of every performance Davey took pictures of.
You sell them so every fan can have a pocket-Johnny handy AT.ALL.TIMES. That´s a market niche, I tell you. Will you be able to get it done by end of April? I will be off line then for a few days and I need my daily Johnny fix. ;-)
Thank you for this fabulous Friday picspam. That was much needed.
Lovely pics. Please keep these cards and photos coming, then recycle. Inspiration is eternal.
