So I find myself at the end of what I would enthusiastically term Not My Best Week Ever, during which, among other things, I became embroiled in editing an extremely lengthy manuscript that will be my constant companion for the foreseeable future and in which I am increasingly baffled by the complete absence of [geek alert] personal pronouns, as if they are a criminal offense (does Putin's reach to outlaw just about everything have no end?), and when I plunge into extensive edit mode for any length of time, the voice of the author tends to embed itself in my head and take over my language center so that I unconsciously start conversing in the same jungle of a writing pattern out of which I am trying so desperately to hack, and thus I keep saying stuff like, "David, could you please take David's empty glass and David's plate out to the kitchen so that Alice, David's sister, could put David's stuff in the dishwasher since it's Alice's turn to load?"
Although it doesn't really matter because my kids are used to these phases and are able to seamlessly ignore me no matter what unexpected style of verbiage I employ ("Forswear and forsooth, Master David, I beg of thee to gently convey thy chalice unto thy sister...") whilst secretly hoping someday Quentin Tarantino will ask me to edit something for him.
Anyway, in between impenetrable paragraphs of proper nouns and other unfortunate events, I took little mindless Internet breaks and came across this lovely combination of verbs and nouns:
Which reminded me of one of my all-time fav Johnny quotes, from his press conference at the Vancouver Olys: "Out of ugly ... make something beautiful."
And which, in turn, has kind of been the point of this blog for nearly three years: a celebration of all the fierce and inspiring beauty that is Johnny, in a world too often overcome by random ugliness.
And so, if you've had a long and challenging week too, or even if you haven't, please join me in savoring something wordlessly beautiful and always restorative:
