Happy Fourth of July!

So is it just me or is anybody else feeling kind of bummed that Gay Pride Month is over?

On the other hand: I live for the day (note: I plan on living into my nineties, but let's not wait until the last minute here, people ...) when Gay Pride Month is no longer necessary.

When being gay is no longer worthy of comment nor seen as an alarming "lifestyle choice"--and a "promiscuous" one at that, like heteros haven't led the world in promiscuity since the dawn of humanity.

When marriage returns to being a religious rite at the house of worship of your choice, and the state recognizes the union of any couple of legal age, regardless of gender, in a civil partnership and affords all such united couples the same legal rights, because the state really has no business sanctioning a religious ceremony in the first place but does bear a responsibility to--and holds a vested interest in, for the sake of societal stability and to at least try to measure up to its ideals--the granting of equal rights for all.

When "God bless America" isn't code for "God bless all the white heterosexual couples of the religious right and help them to have lots and lots of kids so white heterosexuals can remain the majority group--as if just birthing kids guarantees that said kids will grow up to be heterosexual religious bigots like their parents (because hey! at least 10% of 'em will likely be gay!)--and can continue to run this country right into the ground under the ignorant, prejudiced, and infinite idiocy of the likes of Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck."

When it is understood and appreciated by all that "the land of the free and the home of the brave" was bought and paid for by the blood of a variety of sexual orientations. Yes, Rush Limbaugh, you have the freedom to run your mouth to condemn gays because gays have died to preserve that freedom. Even for you.

When "... with liberty and justice for all" really Means. Exactly. That.

So please:

Before I'm too old to hear it--

Let freedom ring.

Thank you!

As a woman who has been with my wife (YES, we were married in Massachusetts in 2008 and live in NY which "recognizes" the marriage, whatever that means) as long as Johnny has been alive, I thank you for the beautiful support you show to us in all you do.

We have been through everything in life together. We met in our 20s and hid in our little closeted life from our families and friends through our 30s. We spent holidays apart with our respective families for 14 years until we got our home and invited them into it. We cared for and buried three parents. We have been to the Bridal Showers, Weddings, Baby Showers, Christenings, Dance Recitals, Concerts, Plays, Confirmations, Graduations, Birthdays, Family Reunions - everything that Aunts/Sisters/Daughters/Cousins/Friends do. We'd done it apart for years, but now we are invited together. Just like "normal" people.

And finally, when we thought it should get easier - people know us and love us for "who we are, not what we are" - we get to fight cancer that is now incurable and which will take us away from each other sooner than later. So many years we've been "separated" from each other because of fear, ours and others. We didn't know what fear was till this.

So thank you for being brave and supporting LOVE and LIFE. We have it and we treasure it. And because of Johnny Weir, people like him and like YOU, maybe more people like US will LOVE and LIVE without fear.

"Can I give you wisdom, inspiration from an older person? ... Everybody gonna die."

It's the LIVING that counts and the LOVING that makes it beautiful. The freedom to do both as you are... PRICELESS.

BIG hugs to you.

"When marriage returns to being a religious rite at the house of worship of your choice, and the state recognizes the union of any couple of legal age, regardless of gender, in a civil partnership and affords all such united couples the same legal rights, ... "

You summed up the issue perfectly. May I quote you?

Thanks for taking the time to share - I read daily and always enjoy your writing. (Almost as much as I enjoy watching Johnny skate).

@ahenriques: That was even more beautiful and powerful than what Misfit has written. No offense, Misfit.

Thanks for commenting on this special blog of Misfit´s and I hope every one reads it.

@ahenriques: i'm so happy that you were finally able to get married. that must mean the world right now. thank you for sharing with us.

@MM: awesome!!

it's gonna take straight people standing with our rainbow brothers and sisters to change this, so please, SPEAK UP!!

if someone says something unkind about GLBTQ folk in front of you, complain!

if someone uses "gay" as a slur, talk to them about it!

join GLBTQ groups in real life and on Facebook, where everyone can see it.

sometimes it just takes making things personal to open someone's eyes.

Oh... I am humbled by all your lovely comments. And so very, VERY grateful for your amazing courage and support in speaking out loud so beautifully. You may think it's nothing. But to us, and especially to the YOUNG people like us, it means everything.

I had a teacher once back in high school who said 'marriage was a state of mind'. He wasn't telling people not to get married, he was telling you how you felt about it was just as important as having a piece of paper. Of course, I also think being able to have that piece of paper is a right that belongs to all people, gay, straight, bi, whatever...

Once again MM, you have outdone yourself! Brilliant as usual!
