By the Numbers

Johnny hit 65,000 on Facebook yesterday!!
Congratulations!!
"Heart of a tiger" and "sparkly warfare" quotes
from this fab Refinery29 interview
conducted last week in San Francisco.

Johnny by the numbers:

Olympic Winter Games: 2

Readers' Choice Awards: 2 -- The only skater other than Michelle Kwan ever to win this award more than once.

US Championships: 3
2004: Youngest US National Champion since 1991.
2006: First skater to win this title three times in a row since
                   Brian Boitano in 1987.

Grand Prix medals: A bunch (I don't totally understand the Grand Prix thing, so I decided to go with the technical term here).
2008:  First American singles skater to win Cup of Russia
UPDATE: And still THE ONLY American singles skater
                     ever to win CoR.
Thanks to Tatiana Edrenkina for this fact!

2009:  One of the few skaters to medal at every Grand Prix event
                    during his career.

Entries he's inspired on this blog: Nearly 400 counting the one coming up next of yet more never-before-seen pics Davey has just released from the vault.

Quotes posted on The Quotable Johnny Weir blog: More than 1,500 with no end in sight because he keeps opening his mouth and saying stuff.

Photos of him in Jen Bee's beyond-amazing stash: More than 5,000. Dear Jen: I you.

Facebook likes: 65,018 as of this writing. That number will be outdated by the time you get to the end of this sentence.
Average number of FB fans gained per month
       in 2011
: 1,370.

Twitter followers: 101, 656 as of this writing etc. etc. outdated blah blah blah.
Average number of Twitter followers gained per month
       in 2011
: 2,166.

Votes cast by fans to win him the 2010 NewNowNext Award for Most Addictive Reality Star: More than 100,000.

Tweets fans have sent to Logo asking when oh when is Season 2 of Be Good Johnny Weir coming: More than 8,674,429.

Votes we need to cast to win him the Mashable Award for Must-Follow Athlete on Social Media in order to beat John Cena and his massive following: In technical terms--a bunch.

How much we love him and thus will vote like crazy: x infinity.

In any society, the artist has a responsibility.
His effectiveness is certainly limited,
and [artists] cannot change the world.
But they can keep an essential margin
of non-conformity alive.
Thanks to them, the powerful can never affirm
that everyone agrees with their acts.
That small difference is important.
— Luis Buñuel
Spanish film director, 1900-1983

HEY!!! We did it!!
Johnny is a finalist for
"Must-Follow Athlete on Social Media"
in the 5th Annual Mashable Awards!!

IT'S KIND OF A BIG DEAL. Mashable gets more than 50 million page views per month, and has been named by Time Magazine as one of the top 25 blogs on the Internet.

He's up against some stiff competition from Yuna Kim and John Cena, among others, but hey--we're really good at voting, and since he tweeted about it and is promo'ing it on his website,  let's make it happen!

He's also in some amazing company: As Megan Gusinski pointed out, finalists in other categories include The Trevor Project, NOH8, GLAAD, and Ellen Degeneres, so you might want to do some additional voting while you're on Mashable's site.

Voting ends on Friday, December 16, and the winners will be announced on Monday, December 19. Just click the graphic above or at the top righthand side of the blog to be taken directly to the voting page for Johnny.

You can vote once per day per Twitter and Facebook account. Please VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!

Bonus video via The Advocate, from their post titled:
"Possibly the Most Beautiful Ad for Marriage Equality We've Seen."
The video was produced by an equality group in Australia,
where nearly two-thirds of voters favor legalizing
gay marriage, according to The Advocate
but prime minister Julia Gillard remains firmly opposed.
I agree with The Advocate
This is one of the most eloquent illustrations I've seen
of this simple concept: Love is love.

The number of times since 2004 that Deb Walsh's heart has exploded in stars while watching Johnny compete, strut, beautify, perform, laugh, talk, sing, pose, cry, tweet, dance, practice, shop, grow, and delight pretty much everyone who come in contact with him...countless.

Amen, Binky, amen! You're not only great with words, you also nail the math.

Johnny is a consummate artist in touch with himself and his times. He has his finger on the pulse. He does not just skate in competition, he pushes the edges of performance art.

Johnny is a fascinating because he is both so tough yet so sensitive at the same time. Greatness and toughness of soul has to do with bearing many slings and arrows and practicing quads, while yet remaining sensitive and compassionate and making artistic fingers.

When Johnny tied with Evan on the numbers at the 2007 Nationals, and Evan was clearly surprised at the tie, that tells me that Johnny might have had a fourth nationals title but for some gaming of the numbers.

To compete or not compete? That's the question. Here's hoping that Johnny keeps skating for the applause and to help keep vital this schizophrenic sport. It's a sport where the wily officials carefully set traps and then stumble in and get yanked up in the net.

It's a sport that turns its back on artistry at the same time that gay artistry has made a perfect storm takeover of TV, Hollywood, Broadway and the concert halls.

To quote the Roadrunner, "Beep beep." Only instead of dust, there's a spray of glittering ice crystals and a snowbank-blizzard-wall of applause.
