Lord of the Rinks: The Return of the Mullet

Johnny in Aruba, tweeted by Victor yesterday
with this note: "A braided mullet is a happy mullet."
To which @Kat_Xander replied
"And a beaded mullet is ecstatic!! ♥!!"

It was with a mixture of shock and sadness last October that fans greeted the tragic news that Johnny had cut off his mullet. Because his hair is one of those topics about which many people are quite passionate, along with his weight ("OMG he's got to be thinner if he's going to quad all over everyone's faces!" "OMG he's too thin!" lather-rinse-repeat) and his need for sunscreen every time he ventures out from his ice cave into natural light. In an interview on VH-1's Big Morning Buzz (which will no longer load WTF VH-1 seriously? We require that all Johnny video footage be available 24/7 for fans around the world who might suddenly need to revisit random interviews for no reason at all other than that he's a billion miles away in Aruba and of course we're really really happy that he's vacationing but OMG we're so incredibly bored don't you know that are you stupid?), he announced that the mullet was gone (and I'd give you the exact quote except the video won't load. Seriously, VH-1? WTF lather-rinse-repeat). So we held a moment of silence for the dearly departed, and then we moved on with our lives, accepting that, well, you know, these things happen and he's probably outgrown that hairstyle and change is good yada yada yada all the things you say to yourself whilst wistfully wandering through archival footage (not on VH-1, of course) showing that magnificent mullet trailing behind him on the ice which then starts you wondering if it's one of those deals like Samson where his amazing powers are actually contained in his hair....

And then suddenly there it was yesterday!! Thank God for Victor!

So in celebration of the fact that Not Only The Bitch Is Back But He Brought The Ecstasy Of His Braided And Beaded Mullet With Him and also because there's not another damn thing to write about at the moment although ever since The List was announced we've been waiting anxiously for USFSA to Reveal The Mysterious Envelopes Of Myth And Legend but The Cabal's Oracle tells me we're a few days or a week or five away from that so we might as well continue to amuse ourselves by obsessing over his hair and his risk of skin cancer, here are some completely random Mullet Moments, most of which are from Ice Dreams 2011 because it just dawned on me the other day that it's been a WHOLE YEAR since that amazingly wonderful event which made me sad so then I had to go digging around in the vault to see if there were any pics that never made it onto the blog and so here you are.

On his capsule collection for Adrienne Landau,
NYFW, February 2011
I also made this beautiful hat,
inspired by, kind of by my own hair – I have a mullet,
and I own it and love it – it’s a Russian-style hat but
there’s an extra flap that goes down the back
to keep your neck warm.

please go watch it right now.

IDK where this rates on the ecstasy scale,
but it certainly looks pleased with itself.

"My dad's a big, like, Budweiser, football,
big Viking-neck, mullet situation. I mean
he's lovely, and I keep the mullet just for him."

Welcome to My World media tour.

Bonus pic!! One more from Ice Dreams 2011,
in which the mullet is not actually visible
but I love the photo anyway. Cuz I took this one.

Mullet related thoughts: Mullets make ice skating sense because you don't get strands in your face during all those spins and jumps.

Sun hats are di rigueur in the tropics if you have a dark power mullet. (After 20 minutes in the sun, my dark hair acts as a solar collector and my head is hot enough to fry eggs.)

Mullets combine the masculine and feminine, work and relaxation, formal and informal. As Johnny once put it, "business in the front, party in the back." A life of balance.

Mullets are styling enablers. There's enough hair available on the head to work with to create Mohawks, feathered headdresses, beaded braids and what have you. A mullet for all seasons....

The Quotable Johnny Weir to the rescue!
Here's what Johnny said about cutting off his mullet on The Big Morning Buzz.

I'd noted during the GLAAD awards red carpet back on March 24 that Johnny's hair looked kinda mullet-ish again. So I was right!
