Before We Get to the Picspam, Please Enjoy This Brief Word from Our Sponsor. Well, Technically We Don't Have a Sponsor. Which Is Why We Can Pretty Much Write What We Want and Sprinkle It Liberally With Colorful Language. But If We Had One (We? Who's We? IDK It's Really Just Me Here Although I Have Been Known to Engage in Animated Conversation With Myself), We're Sure They'd Want You to Watch This Video and Read the Important Words Below It.
HEY!! JOHNNY NEEDS YOUR VOTES!!
The broadcast premiere of the Tylenol Cold Improv-Ice show, part of the Pandora NBC Skating Series, is THIS SUNDAY, January 15, at 4 pm EST / 3 pm CST on NBC!! (Love that he's in their commercial twice in 13 seconds. Thanks to Wendy Stevenz for uploading this!)
Johnny will be performing to LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It" (yes, in the Safety pants), and also to Styx' "Grand Illusion."
Most importantly: We get to vote for the skater (by which of course I mean Johnny. Hello. Although I'm sure everyone was lovely.) who did the best job improvising a program to the songs chosen for
Here, direct from the very kind Alyssa Shane at Disson Skating, are the details on voting:
This year, for the first time, voting for the “Tylenol Cold Best Improv-Ice Skater” will be done on Disson Skating's website. (Yes, as of this writing, all it says on the voting page is, "Come back to vote beginning on January 15, 2012," but by Sunday, the page will be updated and ready for voting.)
Voting is unlimited, with one vote per day allowed through January 31. The winning skater will be announced on Saturday, February 4, during the NBC telecast of "Pandora Unforgettable Moments of Love on Ice" beginning at 4 pm EST.
If you miss the Improv-Ice broadcast on Sunday, you can of course still vote, and the show will be rebroadcast twice on Thursday, January 26, on the Ovation network, at 8 pm EST and again at 10 pm EST. Although I'm sure someone will have uploaded all the relevant portions to YouTube well before then for all of us to enjoy while we
So PLEASE VOTE for Johnny!!! If you have any questions about the voting, please feel free to email me or leave a comment on the blog.
(We now return to our regularly scheduled picspam.)
In today's series of HDOI dress rehearsal photos, we present Bad Romance--but not quite like you've ever seen it before...
The arena was fairly dark for much of Johnny's run-through that afternoon, though the lighting guys added a spotlight now and then (I think they were finalizing exactly how they wanted to handle the lighting for that evening's performance. And BTW they were AMAZING. You don't realize how much of a difference really excellent lighting makes in an ice show until you SEE some, and then you're like, "OMG...!" Kudos to the Digital Lightning crew for an outstanding job, and to Fireworks for choosing them!).
So when we reviewed these shots, we decided NOT to fight with the murky colors in most of them, and instead we tried a few as black-and-whites. And then we went: Wow...
I'm always fascinated watching Johnny on the ice, whether he's performing, rehearsing, or just goofing around. On Friday he didn't seem to be in as much of a goofing-around mood. He was happy to chat with his Japanese fans, but when he took to the ice, he seemed both intense and faraway, and very much in his own world. Despite practically everyone in the building having stopped whatever they were doing to come and watch, he seemed unaware of the crowd, his energy focused inward.
As we all know, Bad Romance is one of his most dynamic and sassy programs. But when he does a run-through, he doesn't do all the jumps and spins and other moves--he sort of drifts through the program, floating across the ice with just the suggestion of a head toss here or an ass swivel there as he reviews the program in his head.
The effect was both compelling and languorously dreamy, and well-captured in black and white.
(And after a while I didn't even really hear the song anymore, though Gaga was belting it out through the sound system as usual, because I was quietly mesmerized... )
(As always, please click any photo twice for full-size view.)
Though it was dress rehearsal,
he didn't change into his Bad Romance costume
for the run-through, but instead remained in the Safety pants
and fur hoodie that he had worn to rehearse
the opening number with the other headliners.
At the usual point in the program,
he tossed off the hood just as he does when performing
in the sparkly hooded costume.
A muted head toss and ass shake here
during the song's chorus...
...as more and more of the Future Stars
join the crowd to watch him....
Striking a pose during the
"walk walk fashion baby" section...
...then the vertical representation
of his signature move.
Toward the end,
he does a gentle spin...
...a few running steps...
...and: he's done.
He exits to the usual screams, whistles, and standing ovation,
even from a dress-rehearsal audience.
Bonus video!! And here is his Bad Romance
performance from Holiday Dreams on Ice,
in case you've just returned from another galaxy
and haven't seen it yet! Thanks once again
to Wendy Stevenz for her mad video skillz!

Hey, Johnny's been nominated for a Shorty Award!! You can join in on the nominating process by clicking here and tweeting your vote for Johnny. Most fans are voting for him in the "Athlete" category.
Note: The Shorty Awards have very specific rules, which essentially boil down to this:
(1) You can only nominate him ONCE from each Twitter account that you have. Additional votes from the same account will NOT be counted. So it's one of those deals where we need a LOT of different people to vote, rather than a few people voting a lot.
(2) Your nominating tweet MUST include a reason (for example: "I nominate @JohnnyGWeir for a Shorty Award in #athlete because he inspires his fans to believe in themselves"--thanks @PatinaGlace!).
(3) You must NOT copy someone else's reason in your vote.
All righty then.
The nominating period ends February 17--please vote vote vote!! For more info, click here.

HOLY ZAMBONI!!
Cannot wait for Sunday: NY Giants AND Johnny Weir!! ♥
(thanks again Davey for the wonderful photos!!)
Between the pending move and marriage, Johnny must have had a lot on his mind.
Thank you for capturing these precious moments when Johnny's introspective aura is shining inward.
Yes, we'll be there to watch and vote.
Although not listed on Johnny's official website, Disson Skating's site says Sunday's Improv broadcast will be repeated on Ovation on January 19, and it's on my local FiOS schedule for that date too.
So those of us who won't see Sunday's broadcast because their local NBC station is broadcasting a NFL playoff game (What are they thinking?! NFL playoff game vs. Johnny Weir--and they're going to show the playoff game?!) may only need to wait four long days to watch Improv.
Nancy, as you know from our Twitter convo, the rebroadcast has been postponed to Jan. 26, per Alyssa Shane (sorry!!). But I'm sure someone will upload it to YouTube long before then...!
*happy smile*
this makes me feel like i was tucked into your pocket and peeking out to watch the rehearsal!
love love watching Johnny skate, no matter what he does.
and hey! just went to vote and they don't have it up yet. c'mon, c'mon, the voting fanatics are ready to get it on!
