Put Your Two Cents in With Johnny!

We interrupt our crazed NewNowNext voting to bring you this important announcement:

We Johnny Weir fans have a truly amazing opportunity to do something that illustrates what Johnny meant when he tweeted: "Always believe in the power of YOU, my angels."

Johnny's fan groups from around the world--Russia, Korea, Japan, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, the U.S., and everywhere in between--are uniting today to launch the first-ever fan project of this scope, called "Ride to Life."

And best of all, Johnny is officially endorsing our project and entrusting us, his fans, to support and promote it everywhere in his name. There aren't many celebrities who would do that--but then, as all we fans know, there's no one quite like Johnny Weir, and very few in the public eye who genuinely appreciate their fans as much as Johnny does.

He's also a man who cares deeply about helping others. One of Johnny's most passionate goals is to turn whatever recognition and celebrity spotlight comes his way toward humanitarian efforts that can ease the suffering of others--to help those who battle illness, discrimination, or other difficulties in their daily lives.

And as his fans, we are just as passionate, both about Johnny and about helping him to achieve his goals in any way we can.

So here's what we're doing:

The annual AIDS/LifeCycle bike-a-thon fundraiser starts this coming Sunday, June 6, and runs through Saturday, June 12. Participants make the 545-mile journey from San Francisco to Los Angeles via bicycle, and each rider seeks donations--usually so many cents per mile--to raise money to help those affected by AIDS.

From the event's website: "AIDS/LifeCycle is a fully supported, 7-day bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, June 6-12, 2010. It’s a life-changing ride—not a race—through some of California’s most beautiful countryside. AIDS/LifeCycle is co-produced by the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and is designed to advance their shared interest to end the pandemic and human suffering caused by AIDS."

This year, for the first time ever, one amazingly generous (and really athletic) Johnny Weir fan--known currently only as "Rider X" because she is choosing to remain completely anonymous throughout this project--has offered to ride in the event on behalf of Johnny and all his fans. She'll be tweeting and twitpic'ing along the way so that everyone can follow her progress.

The rest of us Johnny fans are uniting to sponsor Rider X. And we're hoping that many, many others will want to be a part of our "Ride for Life" project by donating too.

So we've organized ourselves as the "JGW Fan Fund," and our tag line, as you can see from the banner above, is "Put Your Two Cents in and Join Johnny Weir in Making a Difference." Because if anyone's known for putting in his two cents' worth--as wittily as possibly, and damn the consequences--it would be Johnny.

In our project, we're asking every fan for their two cents--roughly two cents per mile, that is--for a total donation of just $10 per fan. Of course, donations of any amount are welcome, so please do whatever works for you. Because when we add your gift to the two-cents-per-mile donations of thousands of others, we have the power to change many, many lives affected by AIDS.

Our goal is to make JGW Fan Fund and Johnny G. Weir one of the Top Ten Donors for AIDS/LifeCycle this year! And we've set our sights high: We want to kick-start this project with $5,000 in donations collected by the time the ride starts this Sunday. At $10/person, that means we need 500 people to donate in the next four days.

Fundraising then continues through July 31, so that gives us time to really pimp this thing out and meet our ultimate goal of $7,500+ in donations. Although personally I'd love to see us go over $10,000--a LOT over $10,000...

After all, we are the people who gathered 10,000 signatures on a petition in the space of just two weeks. Who tweeted #realityWEIR more than 90,000 times--and still counting--in little more than a month. We can do this.

And here are three things you can do right now to help in launching this project:

(1) Please donate! You can do this through Johnny's official AIDS/LifeCycle page via credit card, debit card, or personal check. Or, if you prefer to use PayPal, we've created a second Ride for Life page that accepts PayPal donations. That page will also offer other features, including updates from Rider X and additional pages translated into other languages for Johnny's worldwide fans. In either case, your web-based donation will be securely encrypted and transmitted.

(2) Please pimp! We're hoping to really create some buzz about this in the media, so please post this link everywhere you can and pass it along to everyone you know! This project requires us to shift into maximum pimpage overdrive IMMEDIATELY to meet our Sunday goal!

(3) Please vote! (cuz hey, we're REALLY good at that...) We need to choose a better nickname for Rider X, because a name that drab for someone representing Johnny Weir just will not do. Please click here to take the survey and help pick a name that best represents Johnny and all his fans! And if you can come up with something even better than the ten choices offered, please type in your suggestion. The winning name will be announced on the blog!

All righty then. Let's do this thing! And let's show Johnny that his trust in us is well-placed, and that we do, indeed, believe in our power to make a difference in other people's lives--just as he has made such a powerful difference in ours.

We now return to our regularly scheduled tweeting, frequently interspersed with calls and e-mails to everyone on the planet to say, "Hey, would you be willing to donate just $10....?"

Wonderful idea on Johnny's part and also on the part of Atomic Kitten! Thank you for posting the blog. I odn't know if I can donate right now due to my financial situation, but I sure can help get the link out there, and I will!

Well...that´s something I wholeheartedly support.I definitely will put my two cents in.
I´m not as financially stable as I wish to be right now, but I would do anything to help this special cause. Done.

What a beautiful cause - I'm very happy and proud to donate. Also, I'm giving props to Mama for her tireless work and dedication to help pull this together for Johnny, "Rider X" (totes voted for "And I've Mounted It" as best name EVAAAR!- though the name "Princess Pretty Pedals Puff-and-Fluff" would've been my choice if I had the energy to bike five miles, let alone over 500), and LiveCycle.
